SU has won the backing of a host of other celebrities, including former United players, politicians, actors, rock stars and others.
Lord Bill Brett (politician): “Glazer wants to buy Manchester United on a mortgage, which the fans are expected to repay. Our response must be: ‘this is an offer we can refuse’, and it should be made in no uncertain terms.”
Lord Alf Morris (politician): “It is scandalous that any one individual shareholder can trample all over thousands of other shareholders to take away the Club they love and have supported through so many decades. This has to be stopped.”
Ian McShane (actor): “Repel all borders. I suggest peaceful protest, but would not rule out nuclear reaction if pushed. Power to the people.”
Anthony Farnell (boxer): “This is like a World Title fight. I urge all fans to join SU, come out fighting and we will get a knock-out.”
Alex Stepney (ex-player): “Why should the best Club in the world, which is debt-free due to all the fantastic support of the fans and the achievements of the players and managers over all these years, be plunged into debt to satisfy the greed of any one man? Join SU and let’s keep United independent.”
Harry Gregg (ex-player): “Being a United fan is like following a religion. United has always been my Club, will always remain my Club, and no-one is going to take it away from me. Support your Club by joining SU and having a voice which will be listened to. United is forever.”
Tony Lloyd MP (politician): “This is the time for people to come together and join SU and have their voice heard. This is not a commodity to be bought and sold like a tin of peas. This is a community asset which belongs to the fans. The real supporters want United to be run so that the team improves, so the ticket prices aren’t extortionate, and so that we can have pride in our Club. The last thing we want is to send the Club into debt, or to have someone running it who doesn’t even know what it means to be a Red.”
Debbie Horsfield (screenwriter eg Cutting It’): “I know we can make a difference. I urge all United fans to join SU so that we can send a strong message to Malcolm Glazer, and all predators who want to use United as a cash cow to back off and find somewhere else to interfere. We don’t want him at our Club.”
John Monks (head of European TUC): “I strongly support SU’s opposition to the Glazer takeover bid. The Club should not be a plaything for rich men or a cash cow for people with no commitment to it, to Manchester or to football. Glazer’s reputation is as a predator and our great Club deserves better.”
Paddy Crerand & Sandy Busby (ex-player & son of Sir Matt): “We support what you’re doing. Your cause is just.”
Richard Wilson (Actor): " I think it would be a very sad day for Manchester United if the Club passed into the hands of an individual buyer. Keep United for the fans."
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (Striker): “I am honoured. I think it is important that the club remains in the right hands. I am absolutely on the supporters’ side, and think the club is in very good hands as it is today. I am a United fan myself and only want what’s best for the future.” Adding: “Hopefully I will play for many seasons still, but at the moment it is great to follow the team from the sidelines.”
Other SU Patrons include rock stars Mani from The Stone Roses and Ed O’Brien from Radiohead, actor Robert Powell and a number of others. (for full list, biographical details and photographs, see: http://www.shareholdersunited.org/patrons.php)
OTHER QUOTES:
Eric Cantona: "I hope that the supporters of Manchester will rebel against this football business. They are rather powerful, over there, in Manchester. They already prevented the press baron Rupert Murdoch from taking over their club. I hope that they will know to react."
What I love about this club is the identity, the philosophy....
If someone (Glazer) were to come here we would lose everything….
I am against this kind of thing....
Let him stay (in America) and buy Coca Cola….
(Above quotes from the MUTV interview with Eric Cantona - December 2004)
"We have to look at the solution going forward. Shareholders United are pleading for supporters to buy shares and that's how they can show their allegiance and control of the club going forward." - David Gill Oct '04
"There's a stronger rapport between the club and the fans than there's ever been. We are both of a common denominator; we don't want the club to be in anyone else's hands. That is the way that the club stands with that. I support that."
-- Sir Alex Ferguson (Nov 2004)
“I was pleased to read the statement made by the chief executive of Manchester United, David Gill, when he said any decision would be taken reflecting both present shareholders and future shareholders. I think that is important to a club like Man United who have a tremendous role to play not just in the game, but in the community as well.” - Richard Caborn (Sports Minister) Jan. 2005
"A lot of people want the club's interest to be with people who have grown up with the club and got its interests at heart," Rio Ferdinand told BBC Radio Five Live. "No-one knows what this guy will be bringing to the table." (Feb 7, 2005)
But United winger Ryan Giggs last night admitted he could identify with fans fighting to block the deal.
He said: “The Glazer things don’t affect the players but I sympathise with the view of the fans.
“There is nothing wrong with the way the club is run and fans want that to continue. So do I.
“They feel the club is in good hands and it can’t get any better than it is at the moment.” (Feb 8th, 2005)
