MUST statement in regard to actor James Nesbitt's high profile gesture (http://www.joinmust.org/forum/showthread.php?p=147155)
(If the reports are true) we'd like to thank James for this generous gesture. We've had fantastic support from the passionate Irish Reds so this should come as no surprise. I suppose it is a little ironic that at a time when the Glazers are looking at how to squeeze every last penny they can out of supporters so that they can own our club, some of their money is coming back into the supporters trust and contributing to the long term aim of supporter ownership.
This is just one example of the many offers of financial support we've received from United supporters and also players both past and present. We've even had the offer of a share of testimonial proceeds mooted. They all support the concept of a supporter owned club whether that is in two, ten or a hundred years. The MUST Phoenix Fund is about investing in the future of Manchester United rather than paying the interest on the huge debts our current owners have landed us with.
We hope this high profile gesture will encourage many others to come forward and follow the lead shown by James. Anyone who cares about the future of Manchester United should be getting involved now rather than leaving it until we reach a crisis point.
This year is the 75th anniversary of the club being saved by another James. Just before Christmas 1931 James Gibson saved United from bankruptcy. We owe it to his memory, and all those who built the club, to look after its long term future and show the kind of commitment and foresight that James Gibson showed 75 years ago.
Any supporters wanting to get involved or make a donation can contact us via our website www.joinMUST.org
