Sean's idea to create a video forum is an excellent one, so let's do it.

He's gotten off to a good start listing a number of videos off YouTube.

How this will work

What I'd like to do is to separate each of these videos out so that each clip has its own thread. My reasons for suggesting one clip per thread is because the forum will do a better job indexing them, they'll be easier to search for, and we'll be able to rate them using the forum rating stars.

I think if we just try to follow some simple rules/guidelines for the titles/threads this'll be a great little place -- and it'll be easy to find stuff too (parkesy will be so pleased!)

Here's what I propose - this is totally open to discussion though if people think there are better ways.

First, I'm thinking we should have two subforums: one for general match highlights, the other for specific players.

Within each subforum, the thread titles:
If it's highlights from a specific match, the OPPONENT, whether it was home or away as (H) or (A) or (N), the COMPETITION (abbreviated for space saving purposes), the date in dd/mm/yyyy format and a brief description.

Competition abbrevs: PREM, DIV1, DIV2, FAC, LC (league cup), CL (Champions League), FR (friendly), and if there are any others please suggest.

example:
BAYERN MUNICH (N) - CL FINAL - 26/05/1999 - LAST 3 MINS

I wonder whether we'll have space issues. I'll check to see if we can expand the field size for the title. Again, if you think there's a better way to do this please suggest it.
If it's a collection/compilation of a specific player's feats, then obviously the player name (SURNAME, FORENAME) and a description of the video

example:
CANTONA, ERIC - CHIPS THE KEEPER V SUNDERLAND
SCHOLES, PAUL - GENERAL COMPILATIONWithin each thread:
When you post the YouTube or video clip, go ahead and embed the link so you can see the first frame of the video using the new YouTube bbcode.

Note that you should take the spaces out if you're typing this in (I had to use them to keep from actually embedding the video).

Alternately you can cut and paste the code letters, select them, and click the YOUTUBE graphic in the post editor (you should see right above the box where you enter text for a post. you're looking for this image http://www.joinmust.org/forum/images/editor/youtube.gif
Note that you need to just use the funny code/letters and not the full link in order for this to work.
Please also enter a description of the video clip so people know what they are looking at. Go ahead and be descriptive and editorialise to your heart's content!VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

We need someone to shepherd this project along. The initial work will be to take Sean's post and break it down so that each clip becomes a thread. I'll give mod privileges so you can edit and delete posts within this forum. Please reply to this thread if you're interested in helping out.

We also need some people to scour the net for videos. So anyone looking to do this please reply to this thread.

My hope is that we get 2-3 or even more dedicated "video librarians". Think about how great this would be!

To be honest I think it's mostly to do with embedding flash files, as they could contain malicious action script. I'd imagine you'd be ok with youtube vids. I'll have a dig in a bit to see if I can find anything out.

I would expect that if they've made it onto YouTube then someone else would have discovered any maliciousness already.

If you could have a look that would be great. I'll get started on adding the BB code. I'm going to see if I can restrict it to this forum to begin with (if I can).

Can't see any security issues. You're doing all the embedding at the backend so the user can only post a youtube reference. I've seen a valid point of preventing people from using the new BB code in signatures though.

Will the ability to embed the videos be forum wide or restricted to just this particular one? Just curious.

If you're not fussed, I'm not. It would be nice to see videos in the forum posts rather than have to go externally but I can understand not wanting to be overrun with them.

I always think it's easier to slowly integrate something into different areas than it is to let all hell loose and take it out from places you don't want it, but then I can't see anyone complaining on here either way.

I'm not sure I like either of the two methods for storing them though, mostly because I think once threads become engulfed in other ones it become very difficult to find what you're looking for intuitively. I think they should be stored with the visitor behaviour in mind rather than from an organisation point of view.

I don't think one thread per video is very good because it will become a very long list of confusing thread titles. I'd rather see one thread per game with each containing the relevant video clips as separate posts. You can still rate them but it will be on a game basis rather than individual clip basis. Nothing wrong with that because we're not trying to replicate a youtube type website we're just keeping an archive. You can still find the highly rated ones because most won't have that many clips in. There is also a danger that related threads from any one game would become separated rather than sequential. Example:

To make them easier to search for could we then not employ a kind of keyword tagging system, whereby each individual video post contains keywords based on the video content. e.g a Video of Saha scoring a volley against fulham would contain the words; SAHA GOAL FULHAM VOLLEY, which could then be picked up using the forum search tool by entering those keywords and searching for posts.

Perhaps you could even dynamically build a forum search query string to make it easier for people to search. i.e. build quicklinks to quickly show all video posts containing SAHA+GOAL, or all GIGGS+GOAL etc.

This is what I thought he was going to do, and I agree with you Darren - I think it's better. The rating system for single clips would seem to apply better to the player compilations whereas each match could have the various goals in a single thread.

I think that is a brilliant idea. If we don;t implement something like that, searching for a specific goal would be nigh on impossible.

I've been playing around and have put something together along these lines.

Don't really see that there's much difference myself. Both work well. I've been scouring t'internet for videos and posted a few on the video forum. I've not gone too mad yet as I don't want to make too much work before the format of the whole thing is sorted out.

Also 3 things....

Firstly, I may be a bit silly here, but if we had 200 people all surfing the video site after the match, would the site be able to handle it? Could this create bandwidth problems? I'm sure you tech heads have already looked at this but thought I'd ask anyway.

Second - There are one or two other video sites with some good content on. Are we limiting ourselves to YouTube? I've started 2 seperate threads on the video forum and as you'll see, the YouTube copycat sites linked in "misc videos" are pretty much the same format as YT.

Thirdly - I'd be happy to help out, not sure if I can embed at the moment though? Could someone let me know if I can and maybe give me a couple of pointers if I am needed, cheers.

Oh and fourth point (Yes I know I said 3 points), I voted for Tat. Can't have the yank thinking he's the bees knees can I? I've seen him in his flannel house pants after all:crazy:

I have been working on it a bit recently, its just that I have spent ages redoing a lot of the videos as one of the user got banned from youtube so it didn't look like I was doing much. Should have the season up to date tonite and then split seans/sams post out tomorrow.

That said, it would be good if people could find compilation videos of players to start building up that side of it. If people can't post video then if they post links then I'll do the rest but please put a decent description of the video in as it saves me a lot of time.

Then any vids which don't fit in those can stay in the main forum area. This might make it easier to navigate round the forum. If somebody sets up these forums I'll move the threads across.

I will get back to you with the video or an extract from the video. One is a fuller version of the protest from Hyde, although I am led to believe that it concentrates more on the protest, than it does on the match. The other is about a trip to America.

I've been thinking about the 'this seasons goals' part of this forum recently. One of the big probelms that I have faced in doing this is all the stuff is obviously copyrighted and therefore as soon as servercast (who own a lot of the copyright) find out they ban the user. Okay the video will re-appear under a different username at some point int the future but its a pain. I gave up trying to update each game a long time ago. but I have always been worried that we have a forum that has a lot of videos that don't work. If I arrived on a forum and clicked two videos and they didn't work, I wouldn't hang around.

Next season i think it would be better to post a link to the video in the commentary thread on the main forum. This way there will be a link to the match tracker, some comments about the match, then the videos appear and then some more comments in the same thread. After a fw days the thread will have disappeared off the first page of the MUST discussion forum and therefore people will not expect it to be maintained. I welcome comments from other people and what they think...
