SU Spokesman Oliver Houston said: "Sir Alex is undoubtedly one of the club's and the company's best assets.

"It would be a disgrace if personal score-settling, bullying and dirty tricks were allowed to win the day.

"SU has always pursued an agenda of genuine concern about all aspects of good corporate governance - but what we've witnessed these last few weeks is simply mud slinging as part of a blatant and shoddy character assassination plot.

"If gamblers and currency speculators - or media moguls and oil tycoons, for that matter - were renowned as paragons of virtue it would be less difficult to swallow when the PLC's multi-millionaire shareholders start throwing their weight around."

NOTES:
- Shareholders United (SU) is the country's largest supporters' trust, with thousands of members in 50 countries around the world.
- Individuals, the vast majority of whom are United fans with small holdings who are not in it for profit but rather for the sentiment and to have a say in how their club is run, hold approximately 17 per cent of the PLC's 260million shares.
- SU was at the forefront of the FergieMustStay campaign in 2001.
- SU was formed five years ago to fight off the attempted takeover by Rupert Murdoch's BSkyB.
- SU has seen a record increase in membership in the past week, fuelled by takeover speculation and the attacks on Ferguson.
- Sir Alex Ferguson says (SU Newsletter, Autumn 2000): "Groups like Shareholders United can only be good for the game, I'd urge United fans to get involved."
