I stepped down as newsletter editor after the March edition and editor’s baton has been picked up by Julian Lord, who has been a regular contributor since I took over as editor six editions ago. He will be working in conjunction with Jonathan Bracey Gibbon, who has his own publishing company and designed the March edition. He also arranged the printing at a very favourable rate. To have a professional involved in this way means that the editor’s job is now much less arduous and time consuming and he can concentrate on commissioning copy and looking for advertising.

The March newsletter saw a long-awaited redesign. It now looks clean and new, more professional and more attractive to advertisers, which is essential as our membership figures go up. The whole production and mail-out cost of the newsletter takes up a large portion of SU’s income. However, it is definitely a work in progress and any comments would be gratefully received. Please address them to Julian.

The most widely reported edition of the newsletter to date was the December issue, with Michael Crick’s article on dodgy goings on at the MUplc AGM. It coincided with the heated takeover speculation and the row about the horse, and after appearing on our website and being circulated to sections of the media this was picked by the press worldwide.

(And as an aside, one journalist said to me that he found the SU website an incredibly useful resource on MU stories. Congratulations to Tanya and Sean and everyone else for all their postings.)

I think, going forward, that the main problem for the editor will be to maintain a balance between United Shareholder being a newsletter for our members, informing them of the activities of Shareholders United and its members, and keeping it relevant in terms of news about MUplc. For good or ill, the newsworthiness of Manchester United means that United Shareholder sometimes crosses the boundary from newsletter to newspaper. But as a quarterly it cannot afford to follow the national news agenda.

As well as looking at increasing the advertising content of the newsletter we are also looking at increasing the size and that means more copy. The editor is always looking for contributors, so if you think you have something to say contact Julian Lord at:-
