Supporters’ Direct recently organised a meeting to see if there was any interest in forming a North West Supporters’ Trust. I went along, with two other members of Shareholders United, and discovered the following:
A group of England fans attending the Euro 2004 finals in Portugal are working towards promoting and improving the image of football fans overseas. Whilst in the Algarve region this summer the North West England fans will be working closely with the British Council and taking part in community projects alongside the local people. The group will also be visiting an orphanage in Faro, Refugio Aboim de Ascencao.
As part of a wider initiative by 4England (website: www.4england.org), the independent England supporters club, the North West England fans will be taking as many old and unused football shirts with them to Portugal to give to worthwhile causes such as the orphanage. This idea has been extremely well received and is gaining popularity among many supporters’ groups across the world. The scheme particularly benefits the many underprivileged kids who recognise many of our clubs and players, although shirts from any clubs are greatly appreciated. If you have any old football shirts to give away, and you are intending to come along to the Shareholders United Social evening on Wednesday 26th at Old Trafford, please would you bring your shirts along for me to collect. The deadline for me to get them to the organiser, Ceri-Anne Bailey is next Tuesday 1st June and so time is of the essence. Fortunately Ceri-Anne lives fairly close to me and I have arranged to take as many shirts as I can get to her home on that evening. If you are not attending, please contact me on 07795 101858 if you think you might be able to get a shirt (or two) to me before next week.
Many thanks.
